ELEMENTARY SCHOOL & PRIMARY SCHOOL

Projects for Primary School

Shift to project-based learning!

by Bob Wilson

Ready-to-use Projects for English class at elementary level

EVALUATION SHEETS

Bob Wilson evaluates project work in two ways. While students are working on their projects he acts as a guide on the side and uses an excel to keep a record of how well students are using their time, how well they are working as part of a team and other aspects. You can download a generic excel for this class time record below and adjust it to your particular situation. He also  uses an excel to evaluate the students when they are presenting their work. Once again you can download a generic editable version of this below.

PROJECTS READY TO USE

CREATE YOUR OWN SUPERHERO

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Students create and draw their own superhero.
2 They will learn to talk about:

their hero's special powers e.g. She can fly.
what their hero wears.

RATIONALE

1 This is a fun way to get students talking about ability with CAN and describing what people are wearing.
2 They get the chance to use their imaginations and be creative.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

1 Students can make up role play adventures with other superheroes in their class.
2 Students can make comics in teams where their superheroes have adventures together.

DESIGN YOUR OWN SCHOOL

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Create teams of three of mixed gender.
2 Tell the students they are going to design their own school timetable and their own school which they will need to give a name. They will need 2 classes to accomplish this.
3 The timetables and school designs will be displayed to the class either as posters or by the teacher taking a photo with their smartphone and projecting the images onto a screen.
4 Students say things like, "On Mondays we've got cooking class at nine o'clock." and  "There is a video games room in our school."

RATIONALE

1 This is a really fun way for students to practise telling the time and also for using THERE IS/ARE
2 As with most projects, students are being creative and are learning to share ideas in a team.

FAIRY TALE PLAYS

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Divide the class into groups of 4-5.
2 Each group must choose a traditional fairy tale, such as The  Three Little Pigs
3 They spend 2 weeks or about 4 classes working on the script. The play should last between 4-6 minutes.
4 A teacher, acting as a guide on the side, helps correct their scripts.
5 They spend 2 weeks or about 4 classes working on the script.
6 They will need time to prepare costumes and props and  to rehearse.
7 If there  is a pre-school, invite them to the performance as an audience.

RATIONALE

1 Putting on a play, even a short fairly tale, is a complex task and students will have to develop a whole series of skills to achieve this.
2 This project gives them a chance to really do stuff for themselves in an independent fashion and they appreciate the trust and confidence their teacher has in them.
3 Students will be delighted to get the chance to entertain the little ones of the school and this activity also helps cross divides and unite children of different ages.

EVALUATION

Points to evaluate could include: the script, use of English, teamwork, acting skills, quality of the costumes and props.

FASHION SHOW

INSTRUCTIONS

1 In groups of four students are going to prepare a fashion show.
2 You have to prepare clothes for spring, summer, autumn and winter.
3 Students will have to take turns being the compere and describe what students are wearing using the present continuous.
4 Selecting the right music will also be a part of the project.
5 Students will need time to prepare their costumes and what they are going to say during the show.

RATIONALE

1 This is a great way to put the present continuous and the clothes vocabulary into a real situation and the children have a great time!
2 As with most projects, students get the chance to develop their organisational, interpersonal and creative skills in a fun way.

EVALUATION

Points to evaluate could include: the script, use of English, teamwork, creative skills, clothes lexicon and use of the present continuous.

MASTERCOOK JUNIOR

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Make teams of three with mixed genders.
2 Revise uncountable nouns with them. I have a video tutorial about this here: https://youtu.be/E2-8t-3DZho
3 Show students an episode of Masterchef Junior USA and ask them to take notes of useful expressions and vocabulary while they watch. Here is the link: https://youtu.be/fWenn7fJeWM
4 Here is a summary of useful words and expressions in case you need it. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OlnO4j0FkUugNjYWXqzHY4YJNKXMYDAszPiKQqQKxRE/edit?usp=sharing
5 This project has three parts.
6 Part 1: Cooking role plays. Teams practise cooking imaginary meals live in front of the class.

Give teams 5 minutes to prepare to demonstrate a recipe of their choice.
The class then enjoys watching each team demonstrate their recipes in front of the class.
Part 2: Teams take turns being the judges.

When a team finishes demonstrating their imaginary recipe, they take their plate to the judges who then pretend to sample it and make judgements.
7 Part 3: The Evaluation

After two classes of practising the role plays, teams will do the role plays but be assessed for good use of English and vocabulary as they do it.
This time, the teacher gives the dish that students must prepare to them rather than them choosing. Teams have 5 minutes to prepare their demonstration.

.a location in their town
2 Next they have to do the menu which includes starters, main courses, desserts and drinks. It would be cool to plasticize the menu..
